Hello, lovelies!
If you follow me onΒ Instagram, you know that I love brightly colored hair. You may have seen my old blue hair before, but I’ve also done orange, hot pink, purple, and burgundy. This time I wanted to do something different. With the help of Kristin at Gl’amour Beauty Bar,Β I decided to turn my hair into an oil slick.
What the hell is it?
If you haven’t heard of the oil slick trend yet, I’ll explain it to you. It’s pretty much opal and rainbow hair’s dark cousin. You know what it looks like when your car leaks oil on the driveway? It’s black with swirls of blue, purple, green, and pink.
The Process
We started with lightening my hair. When your hair is as dark as mine, you can’t have fun colors without a bit of bleach. This time we went with an ombre look. If you decide to bleach your whole head, prepare to have your whole scalp scab and peel off. I’ve done that a few times. It’s not pleasant, but the end result is pretty fucking awesome.
Kristin and I decided to go with blue, teal, and pink. This time we used Pravana Vivids Locked In, so the colors wouldn’t mix together.
The Final Product: Oil Slick
The colors weren’t as bright as I would have liked, because we used Locked In, but I’m still absolutely in love with my hair. The colors didn’t mix into some weird, ugly, poop-like color, which definitely makes up for the lack of brightness. I feel like a badass unicorn mermaid. Does that make me a narwhal? I’m totally okay with that. Next time, we’re going to use different dye, so it will be brighter.
I love how it looks straight, but it’s even cooler curled, in a bun, or braided. I’m having too much fun playing with it.
Do you like dying your hair? Do you enjoy looking like you dipped your head in a box of melted crayons? What’s your favorite ridiculous hair color? Let me know in the comments! xo
P.S. Have youΒ subscribedΒ to my newsletter yet? If not, you totally should.
Ooh I love this! At the moment I’ve got a classic ombrΓ© but will be going back to silver grey for my winter themed wedding later on this year! Lauren X Saharasplash.com
I absolutely love silver grey! It will be perfect for your wedding π
I really like this, it’s like what you get when you combine glamour and light bright! π Also really like silver grey, always been tempted to try it.
Thank you! I actually considered silver grey for a few months, before I chose oil slick.
Ok, the pictures here look even cooler than the ones on Instagram!! I love dying my hair, have been doing so for 10+ years, but I’ve never bleached it. Part of me is scared of it, the other part is dying to do so though!! I usually just wear a simple ombre from auburn to a darker auburn / reddish auburn to brown auburn. But I’ve been wanting to integrate more color somehow!! I’ve been looking into hairchalk, I guess it could give me a little hint of how color would look on me :3
Aww thank you so much! I have to say, I do love a good auburn. I’ve been doing crazy colors since 2007 and bleaching on and off since 2008. If you’re scared to make the jump, definitely try hair chalk or clip in extensions. That way you can see how the color looks before you commit. Also, if you do end up bleaching and coloring, don’t expect the color to look like the sample. Everyone’s hair reacts to the bleach and color differently. I’ve noticed that with my hair, it usually takes 2 or 3 sessions with the colored dye before my it’s the right color.
Thanks for the advice π
