Hello lovelies!
I can still remember my first ballet class, when I was 4 years old. I can see myself walking up the stairs to the studio in a pink leotard with the sparkly pink tutu that I stole from My Size Barbie.ย
ย
I danced on and off for a few years, but by the age of 8, I decided to take it more seriously. Eventually, I was taking ballet, jazz, hip hop, and tap weekly, and I was considering adding a pointe class and a tricks class to my already packed schedule. While I was graceful on stage and in the studio, tragedy struck during lunch 2 months before my 8th grade play and 3 months before my spring recital. I decided to play basketball with the boys, and I tripped over one of them. I didn’t cry, until the doctor told me that I had a spiral fracture in my ankle. My role as a lead tap dancer in the play had to be altered. I had to miss the recital and auditions for the dance team at the high school. I had no idea that a single lunchtime accident would change my life as much as it did.
A series of unfortunate events eventually placed me on my high school’s cheer team. While I thoroughly enjoyed cheer, it never replaced dance in my heart. Cheerleading is statistically the most dangerous sport, which I learned firsthand. The tendonitis in my knees, wrists, and ankles, as well as the chronic back pain, still plague me over a decade later.
The dancing bug never left me. Over the years, I’ve taken some Tahitian, ballet, and modern classes, but I haven’t been able to dance like I used to. The numerous injuries from my childhood and teen years have made me unable to take dance as seriously. I still crave the days I spent in tutus and ballet shoes.
The moment I saw this tulle skirt at Windsor, I was reminded of my first ballet class. I knew I had to have it. However, I initially had trouble styling it. Did I want to go super ballerina-ish with a tank or bodysuit and ballet flats? Shouldย I be edgy with a leather moto jacket and booties? Did I want to go the quirky route and wear it with a graphic tee and sneakers? Then I found these works of art gathering dust in my closet.
I’ve had these shoes for over 3 years, and they’ve never seen the outside of the house. I feel like the spikes are super fun and edgy, but the fact that they heel less gives them almost a pointe shoe vibe. Because this outfit already had 2 great pieces, I went with a simple blue shirt.
Of course, I had to match my lips to my shoes. You’ll see which products I used for this makeup look in Makeup Monday: Bold Fuchsia Lips.
Even though my plans to be a real dancer didn’t work out, my tulle skirt helps me live out my fantasies temporarily. What’s your favorite way to style a tulle skirt?
