Tale as Old as Time: Why I Love Beauty and the Beast

As I’m sure you know, I’m a huge Disney fan. Like huge. Like many other 90s kids, I grew up on Disney. I had almost every Disney movie on VHS, and I watched them all the time. Because we lived in California, my family and I went to Disneyland all the time. I think our record was 6 or 7 times in 1 year. One of my favorite Disney movies has always been Beauty and the Beast. I grew up with the cartoon, but I love the live action remake even more. I’ve seen it twice, and I downloaded the soundtrack a couple hours after watching it for the first time. Is there anything Emma Watson can’t do?

Of course, Beauty and the Beast has never been without controversy. Most recently, a few people were mad about the fact that Le Fou was gay in the live action remake. If you ask me, those people can go choke on some dicks. Personally, I’m totally shipping him with Stanley. I’m pretty sure they’re now married and have a Bichon Frise and a couple of poodles. Anyway, if you can get past the whole Stockholm Syndrome issue and borderline beastiality, it really is both a great love story and a great feminist story.

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m happily single. My goal in life is to grow old on a homestead in the middle of nowhere with a couple dozen furchildren. However, if a guy offered me a library like the one in the Beast’s castle, I’d give up my life of solitude at the drop of a rose petal.

I’m sure that my fellow bookworms would agree that the Beast’s interest in Belle’s love of literature is incredibly attractive. In the cartoon version, he adorably listens to her read aloud for hours on end and introduces her to the library, simply because he knows she’ll enjoy it. I have to say that live action Beast is even better. He shows Belle the library, because he hates her literary choices and wants to expand her horizons. He challenges Belle intellectually, which is something she desperately lacked in her provincial life.

Although Beauty and the Beast may appear oppressive on the surface, it really is about Belle making her own choices. She chooses to be well-read in a town that doesn’t encourage education for women, and she chooses to not marry Gaston, the most successful and handsome man in town. She chooses to take her father’s place as the Beast’s prisoner. Belle chooses to stand up for herself, when the Beast is being unreasonable. She chooses to stay and help the Beast when he saves her from the wolves, and she chooses to return to him and save him from Gaston. Finally, she chooses to love the Beast, even when their love would be frowned upon by others.

My love for these movies has made its way into my wardrobe. When I saw this Belle dress on Modcloth, I had to have it. Now that the weather is warming up, I can’t wait to wear it!

My little beast, Thor, decided that he needed to be in the photoshoot. And, yes, that’s an enchanted rose from Disneyland.

What are some of your favorite Disney movies? Did you love the new Beauty and the Beast as much as I did? Let me know in the comments! xo

  • I love the Beauty and the Beast. Such a good movie(s). It really does have a great learning story to it.

  • My favorite Disney movie is Mulan, because from the first time I saw it, I loved her! She became quite a role model for me. I haven’t been to the movie theater in a while, but I’m sure I will enjoy Beauty and The Beast! I think Emma Watson is a great choice to portrait a strong, female lead <3

    • Mulan is my #1 favorite Disney movie of all time! Part of me was just super excited to see an Asian “princess,” but she really is an awesome role model. I was super excited for the live action version, but I recently heard that it won’t have the music! You’ll definitely enjoy the new Beauty and the Beast!

  • That dress is amazing! I love the idea of a story making its way into your wardrobe.
