Halloween is (sadly) over, so it’s time to look ahead to Thanksgiving. Even though it’s not as exciting as costumes, candy, and Hocus Pocus, I have to say that I love stuffing. Possibly as much as Oprah loves bread. My family lives states away from our extended family, so we usually spend the holiday in sweatpants. Choosing what to wear for a big family celebration can be hard, especially when you know you’re going to stuff yourself silly. Hopefully my Thanksgiving Style Guide helps you out.
Thanksgiving Style Guide
Fancy Party
A fancy Thanksgiving dinner party is the hardest one to dress for. It’s almost impossible to find something that’s both dressy and comfortable. I recommend lots of stretchy fabrics and no shape wear.
I actually have Modcloth’s Lady Love Song Sheath Dress in emerald velvet. It’s super stretchy and comfortable, but I does show bumps and lumps. If you’re a shape wear girl like I am, this dress won’t be the best to wear for eating. However, if you hate shape wear, you’ll totes be fine.
If you don’t think you’ll need a sweater, Modcloth’s Affinity for Fancy Sheath Dress is a great choice. The shoulder details are gorgeous.

Unique Vintage’s Delores Swing Dress is one of my new faves. I wore it for Halloween, and it’s possibly the most comfortable dress in my closet. The fabric is soft and super stretchy, but I don’t think shape wear is necessary. It comes in a bunch of colors in sizes XS to 4X, so you can definitely find the right one (or ones) for you.
Family Party
It’s a bit easier to dress for an informal family party, but I still don’t recommend pajamas or sweatpants. Depending on your family, you might be able to get away with a sweater and jeans or leggings.
Go for stretchy pants that don’t look like leggings. Modcloth’s I Admire Your Quirks Ponte Pants are a good, dressier option. The floral embroidery by the pockets is gorgeous.
If you want to be a little more casual, Modcloth’s Sleeks for Itself Pants are perfect. they come in black and denim. I have the denim ones, and they’re crazy comfortable. They look like skinny jeans, but they’re as comfortable as leggings.
Some cozy, comfy sweater options are Modcloth’s Staycation Innovation Sweater, Corner Coffee Shop Cardigan, and Airport Greeting Cardigan.
Hermit Party
My family and I are hermits. While we love our extended family, we’re perfectly happy with just the 4 of us, plus the pets. This is how I dress, when we don’t have any Thanksgiving guests.
If I managed to change out of pajamas, I wear lounge pants, like Modcloth’s What Was Lost Has Been Lounge Pants, or leggings, like their Good Light, and Good Luck Glow-in-the-Dark Leggings.
I usually pair my super comfy pants with a silly graphic tee, like Modcloth’s Carbe Diem Tee, or a quirky sweatshirt, like their Fur Our Conversation Sweatshirt.

Did I miss anything in my Thanksgiving style guide? What do you usually do for Thanksgiving? Let me know in the comments! xo
I think you’ve got this nicely covered. The dresses are gorgeous, but I never get to go for a fancy dinner on Thanksgiving. It’s always casual family dinners. I usually wear some nicer, dark pants and a nice but baggy blouse 😀 Hides everything so I can eat in peace 😉
Thanks, dear! Baggy tops are a must for casual family dinners! I hope your pants are stretchy, too! I can’t Thanksgiving without stretchy clothes, because stuffing. Lol
I love the vintage swing dress! But that would be over dressing for my family’s thanksgiving dinners. We are more of a casual family dinner. I wear anything between jeans/leggings/sweaters to a casual dress. I would love to attend a fancy dinner though!
I absolutely need that dress in every color! A fancy Thanksgiving dinner sounds like a great idea, until you start eating. LOL It’s a great date night dress, too. I’m a weirdo, so I actually wear it to work, even though my boss and I work from her home office, and I’m allowed to wear pajamas.
That’s not weird! It’s nice youbhave the option to wear either pajamas or a nice fancy dress!
Haha yeah. I love it!
I can’t remember what I wore last year. I was probably a slob.
I’ll try not to be a slob this year.
I’m usually a slob on Thanksgiving. It makes eating 8 plates of stuffing a lot easier.
