I’ve been dying my hair ridiculous colors for over a decade. I just don’t feel right if I have “normal people” hair, but there’s no denying that it’s hard to maintain. Back in the day, I had to touch up my crazy color with Manic Panic every week. Discovering Overtone totally changed my life. (And, no I’m not getting paid for this.)
What is Overtone?
If you’ve never heard of Overtone, I’m about to blow your mind. They have a deep treatment, daily conditioner, and colorless hair mask. I’ve never used the colorless hair mask, but the other two are some of my favorite products ever. Their products are all 100% vegan and ammonia-, paragon-, sulfate-, and cruelty-free!
How do you use it?
The daily conditioner is great for maintaining color. My hair is crazy thick and coarse, and the conditioner isn’t enough to hydrate it, so I often mix it with my regular conditioner. I wash my hair first, mix equal amounts of Overtone and my regular conditioner, clip my hair up, and leave it in for 5-10 minutes before rinsing. This product is especially helpful if you wash your hair every day.
The deep treatment coloring conditioner actually deposits color. It doesn’t contain any bleach or lightener, so your results will vary based on your starting hair color. They have swatches for every shade, so you can have an idea of what you’re getting before you buy. It’s great for touch-ups between salon trips or for just coloring your hair by yourself at home.
You can start with either wet or dry hair, but either way, I recommend using gloves. I prefer to start with dry, because it takes the color a bit better. Section your hair when applying, so you can work it through evenly. They recommend leaving it in for 10-15 minutes, but if you have super stubborn hair like I do, I recommend leaving it in for 30-45 minutes. Because it doesn’t contain bleach, it’s safe to leave it in longer. You may want to use a shower cap, so you don’t end up staining anything around your house. When you’re ready, just rinse it out, and you’ll be left with beautiful bold hair color!
