Lately, I’ve been thinking about things that make me happy: horror movies, cats, drag queens, sewing. Although I love all of those things, none of them brought along the sunshine I need in my life. Then I thought about an actual human ray of sunshine. Dolly Parton.
When I was a little girl, Dolly Parton looked like a living Barbie doll. With her big blonde hair, charming smile, and sparkly outfits, she was the epitome of glamour. As I grew up, I fell in love with her catchy and relatable music, self-deprecating sense of humor, and the love she has for all people. (Can we all just vote Dolly for President?) I’ve been watching Dolly documentaries lately, and I felt the need to bring a bit more Dolly into my life. Then it hit me. I needed a Dolly Parton outfit!
The Supplies
- Yellow and white fabric
- Floral appliqués
- Clear thread
- Rhinestones
- Bedazzler
- Sewing Machine
- George + Ginger Selfie Shirt pattern
- George + Ginger Zappa Pants pattern
The Process
I’ll admit it. I did things kinda backwards. I ordered the fabric waaaaaaaay before I found the perfect top pattern for this outfit. Luckily, I guessed well and had enough fabric!
The pants were the easiest part of this project, so I decided to tackle them first. I made them as instructed in the pattern directions, and they were a perfect fit. The appliqués took much longer to stitch on than I expected, but they were perfect. Finally, I added the rhinestones with my trusty bedazzler.
The top was a bit intimidating. It took forever to find the perfect pattern, and even that had to be adjusted a bit. I added some white fabric to the bust and bell sleeves, and I just hoped for the best. I took a short break, and came back to find my cat curled up with it, pins and all.
The Backwoods Barbie
I couldn’t wait to finally put on my Dolly Parton outfit, so I glued on some lashes, teased my hair to Jesus, and strapped on some platforms. I was ready.
Seriously, this was the most fun I’ve ever had taking pictures.
How are you staying sane in this crazy world? Let me know in the comments!
