Happy Halloween month! In honor of the best month of the year, I’m going to pull together 1 costume per week with stuff I already have in my closet. This week, let’s discuss marionettes.
Creating the Control Bar
- Cut your cardboard into 2 rectangles and use the marker to draw wood grain on them.
- Make and X with them and glue them together.
- Attach your wire use the wire to poke a hole in the middle of your cardboard X. Stick the end of the wire through the whole and bend the tip over. Use the hot glue to hold it in place on both sides.
- Poke holes at the end of each arm of the X and string some yarn through them. The back 2 should be long enough to reach your ankles, and the front 2 should be shorter for your wrists.
The Outfit
There are a lot of ways you could style your marionette. A cancan dancer, Pinocchio, a clown, a princess. The possibilities are endless. I decided to go with a slightly haunted, slightly goth-y doll. The Vacation Dress from Vixen by Micheline Pitt was perfect with Chase & Chloe shoes and a pretty belt and petticoat from Amazon.
Attaching the Control Bar
This can be done in a couple different ways. I have a bunch of crazy thick hair, so I just put it up in a bun, wrapped the end of the wire around the base of the bun, and pinned it into place. If you’re worried about how secure your rig is, you could also wrap the wire around a headband or flower crown.
The Marionette
After everything is on, carefully attach the yarn to your ankles first, and then your wrists, and you’re good to go!
What are you dressing up as for Halloween this year?
