As I’ve gotten older, wiser, and more jaded, my taste in movies has changed from light and fluffy to scary and twisty. However, there are a few fluffy pieces of cinematic art that I will always love. One of these glorious pieces is Clueless.
As it was for many 90s girls, Clueless was a defining moment in my life. It shaped my vocabulary with catchphrases like “As if!” and “Whatever!” It shaped my love for fashion with plaids, bright colors, and ridiculous accessories. Of course, it gave me my first true love: Paul Rudd. I’ve been searching for the perfect Cher Horowitz outfit for the greater part of my adult life, and I started hunting for the perfect yellow plaid fabric since I started sewing. I finally found that fabric last week, and it arrived a couple days ago!
I’m not a big fan of following patterns and rules, so I traced the front and back panels of my favorite flannel to create the base for a button down top a few weeks ago. The collar was difficult to trace, so I just kind of made one up. I wanted the sleeves to be a bit more form-fitting, so I created my own pattern for those using my measurements. It worked out perfectly for my Clueless outfit. I tossed on my new favorite bodysuitΒ to add a pop of white underneath.
I wasn’t quite sure what to do for the skirt, so I guessed on the width that I needed and cut out a long rectangle. The plaid helped a lot when I started folding pleats. I pinned them in place and set my serger to work. A couple hours and a broken needle later, I had the perfect plaid pleated skirt!
It’s a bit late to use this outfit now, but I’m already ahead of the game for Halloween next year! What are some of your favorite iconic outfits? Let me know in the comments!
